ACM students massage grateful staff and residents
Both clients and staff at Youngcare were excited to receive their massage of choice from the ACM student volunteers.
Youngcare believes all young people deserve to live young lives and was established in 2005 following the inspirational story of one woman's battle to find relevant and dignified care. Youngcare is committed to raising awareness of the issue across the nation in order to drive change and create real choices for young Australians and their families.
There are currently more than 7,500 young Australians with full-time care needs who are living in aged care simply because there are few alternatives. There are also 700,000 more young Australians being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support.
It was clear to the ACM volunteers immediately on entering the facility in Brisbane that this wasn’t a nursing home. The décor was bright, open and inviting with lots of windows and natural light. It radiated a warm, positive feel.
The passionate and caring staff evidently share strong connections with the residents and were excited to choose between receiving a seated or table massage as well!
Youngcare staff provided the ACM students with background on each resident prior to the massage session so that the treatment was tailored to each individual’s needs.
A male resident who had previously played guitar with many famous bands requested seated massage to the left side of his body, in the hope this may assist him to regain the ability to play his beloved instrument.
The resident for which Youngcare was originally founded was bed bound and enjoyed a foot massage. Another relished a leg massage as the sling that assisted transferring her from the bed to her wheelchair had been giving her some pain.
One resident whilst thanking the students even commented that touch was exactly what was missing from her life. One ACM student felt it had been a rewarding and life-changing experience.
It’s great to see students continuing to enjoy giving back to the community through the ACM Diploma of Remedial Massage Course.
