ACM GRADUATE INTERVIEW - Linda Kenny
Enjoying the flexibility and work-life balance provided by running her own massage clinic, Linda emphasises it's never to late to follow your dreams.
What first interested you about massage?
I have always suffered from headaches and migraines and just thought it was something I had to live with until someone suggested I try massage therapy. Once I experienced the benefits of massage and the difference it made to my life I knew that I wanted to be able to help people in the same way.
How long have you been massaging?
I began massaging as soon as I completed my Diploma studies. I run my own clinic (Time Out Massage Therapy) from home as well as offer treatments once a month in a small seaside town called Beachport. I’m also employed by the local football club as a Remedial Massage Therapist/Sports Trainer working alongside a great colleague. I am always learning new techniques and different ways to treat a variety of muscular conditions.
What do you enjoy most about massaging?
Wow! Where do I start?
"I love the flexibility of choosing my own work hours in the convenience of my own home, giving me the opportunity to create a perfect work/life balance."
I also love that there are so many different modalities in massage which allow me to continue to study and learn new skills and develop as a Massage Therapist. I love the calm and relaxing environment that allows me to lose myself in the massage and focus 100% on my client on the table.
However, the thing I love the most about massage is being able to help people in such a positive way. Whether they are there to relax or for remedial purposes, my sole focus is the wellbeing of each individual and to achieve the best possible outcome for everyone. If I can use the power of touch to help to heal my clients with sore tired muscles, or to allow them to escape from the stress of everyday life with a relaxation massage, then I have the most incredible job in the world.
What was your experience at ACM like?
I live in a small country town and had to travel to study massage. I have two children and a part-time office job so to be able to do the theory subjects by correspondence was fantastic. I then travelled one weekend a month to the on-campus weekends which suited my situation perfectly.
From the minute I walked into my first Introductory Massage Class, right through to my last Diploma lesson I felt so comfortable and looked after every step of the way. Every class was presented in a relaxed yet professional manner and the whole course was presented in such a well-structured way that flowed from one lesson to the next. The college draping policy was fantastic and shows the care and respect provided for each and every student in the class. Everyone at ACM, including the administration team that answered all of my enquiries, to my Lecturer who made every class so informative and enjoyable, are all such wonderful, supportive people who made studying massage such an enjoyable experience for me.
How have your studies at ACM assisted preparing you for working in the massage industry?
Everything I learnt at ACM prepared me for working in the massage industry. Thanks to the care and commitment of my Lecturer I developed both the hand skills and the confidence to be able to run my own clinic as soon as I received my qualifications. The home study subjects were easy to understand and all assisted in preparing me to work in a professional clinic environment.
What advice would you give aspiring massage therapists?
Just do it! I have always wanted to study massage but with work, money and family commitments the timing was never quite right. However, I never gave up on my dream. I received my Diploma Certificate and I have never looked back. Massage has opened a whole new world of opportunities for me and I look forward to continuing my career in whatever direction it may take me.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
"The highlight of my career happens every single day when a client gets off the table and says how much better they feel."
I have always worked in a job that suited my circumstances at the time and of course we all need a salary. It is only when I started massaging that I realised that not only can you work to earn a living but you can absolutely love what you are doing as well.
