GRADUATE INTERVIEW - Managing two luxury Day Spas has been a dream come true for ACM Graduate Melina McCormick

10/11/2009

Interview with Melina McCormick

For Melina McCormick, her ACM training provided inspiration and support while managing two luxury Day Spas in Northern Queensland.

What first interested you about Massage?

I was interested many years ago when I was working at the gym and taking classes. All the staff would be massaging each other and it gave such comfort. I thought "hhmmm, that feels nice and yes people are enjoying themselves". I like to make people feel good, so l decided to learn.

How long have you been massaging?

For approximately 5 years, but really full time for 2 years at the spas.

What do you enjoy most about massaging?

I do enjoy the relief it offers our clients and for people to feel so good about themselves. Massage is a great way to help people feel relaxed. It also gives them an escape from their everyday world, so sometimes they will talk about the problems that they are having.

What was your experience at ACM like?

ACM was fantastic.

Because l live in such a remote area, I wasn’t able to go to a hands on massage course, so viewing the dvds and referring to the literature was just fabulous.

The resources are very easy to follow and if there are any questions ACM is just an email or phone call away.

The ACM staff are so very down to earth and very approachable as well.

How have your studies at ACM assisted preparing you for working in the massage industry?

The course has just given me so much confidence and is also helping my staff, as I have regular meetings and review some of the skills l have learned.

What advice would you give aspiring massage therapists?

Definitely, definitely do the course from ACM. It is so easy to follow and understand, you can basically take as long as you like. There is no pressure to get the assignments done by a certain date, etc. So just take your time and do your practical at the same time so you are visually learning.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Completing my qualification and operating 2 major day spas in Port Douglas.

It is very challenging running a business, but as a qualified therapist, it has given me the confidence in the day-to-day running my spas. I am able to give the best treatment to all my guests and l have a great working relationship with all my staff. Also, instead of giving all the time, you are also receiving by seeing the clients float out after your massages. That makes you feel just so fantastic, it gives you a real sense of satisfaction.

I manage the following day spas:

Treetops Resort and Spa

Located within a magical melaleuca rainforest setting and natural waterway ecosystem, the Treetops Resort and Spa provides the ideal setting for rejuvenation of the soul.

Balé Spa

Encompasses tropical garden Spa pavilions, Balé Spa embraces the uplifting, balancing and meditative Spa traditions of the East. Balé Spa is a haven for discerning guests to replenish, restore and revive.
