I was first introduced to massage while undergoing rehabilitation for a shoulder reconstruction. The care I received during my rehabilitation made me realise that I would like to be involved in the health industry. That is now 11 years ago and a successful, fulfilling journey is continuing. The satisfaction of working with AFL players and seeing them perform to their optimum made me realise that, as a massage therapist, I had a role to play in their success. This is also the way I have felt in regards to the work I have performed on local and Olympic athletes. From a clinical perspective, nothing is more challenging than a client presenting with a particular pain and then after treatment leaving with no discomfort and feeling fantastic. This gives me great satisfaction, something I feel everyday in this profession.

After teaching Physical Education for close to twenty years, l decided that l needed a change in direction as far as my career was concerned. I now work in association with Physical Recovery and Development, a physiotherapy business that sees massage as an important and integral part of the healing and recovery process. I treat people who are suffering from a wide range of problems and complaints - which are either work or sports related, or involve rehabilitation after major motor vehicle injuries. This is both challenging and very rewarding. Thank you ACM for such an extensive and inspiring course.

Before I entered into the field of massage I had been working in hospitality for 10 years where I felt l wasn´t getting much satisfaction from my work and I decided it was time to start again. I wanted to do something that I could not only feel good about, but could also be responsible for the standard of my work. I had always wanted to know more about massage and the human body, so l found the transition into massage a natural one for me. I now operate my own Day Spa centre in Hepburn Springs – the spa capital of Australia. The knowledge and skills I received during my course and the support of very experienced lecturers provided me with an extensive resource base which gave me the confidence to set up my own successful business.

With the demands involved in running a large retail business, and supervising a large staff, I have found massaging part-time to be more of a relaxing outlet rather than an added pressure. I look forward to the evenings when l see my massage clients as it takes me away from everyday events. I can’t emphasise enough for anyone interested in this field to enrol with the Australian College of Massage. The College maintains top professional and ethical standards along with a first class set agenda compatible to everyone.

I work as a life and corporate coach and one of the main focuses of my work is enhancing the performance of organisations. The massage course was so comprehensive, enabling me to integrate bodywork into my business. I apply much of what I´ve learned from my massage course to my own daily life and to the lives of my clients. Often my clients who come for personal life coaching sessions are redesigning their lives to reduce stress wherever they can. While they are making healthy changes to their lives the massage helps in detoxification and provides stress relief for them. It also gets them more in tune with their bodies and they can take action before their stress manifests as an illness or disease.

When people ask me ‘what was it like massaging on a cruise ship?’ All I think is: where do I start? ‘Galaxy’ is the name of the ship, ‘Celebrity’ is the Cruise Line. Ever see the series ‘The Cruise’? That’s the ship I worked on. In Alaska we’d dog sled or relax at a restaurant and munch on fresh salmon. In the Caribbean we’d shop, relax at the beach or get the adrenaline going by free falling. I’ve talked to many therapists Internationally and Australia-wide, and the more people I meet, the more grateful I am that I chose such a wonderful and professional massage College to teach me all the fundamentals of massage and how to start out my career as a Remedial Massage Therapist.

This is my destiny - giving a massage and having a massage, and since becoming a masseur, it´s been the love of my life. I have a room at the local Bush Nursing Hospital where I massage hospital clients, staff and people in the community. My experience as a masseur for the Kosovo Refugees at an established Safe Haven was both rewarding and humbling. Massage became a very important part of some of the refugee´s lives, and I am so very glad to have learnt such skills at a very professional College. I can´t imagine my life without massage.

After obtaining a degree in Business Accounting I worked in the Accounting and Finance field for 7 years. I worked for large companies and found that I wasn´t obtaining job satisfaction. I wanted to be able to have a positive impact on other people’s lives. Having recently discovered massage as a viable solution to my own health, I decided I would like to give that feeling to others. It amazed me how such a non-invasive tactile therapy could produce the kind of results I was seeing. I believe massage will play a huge part in health maintenance and rehabilitation in the future. Nothing beats having a client come to you in pain and walk away saying ‘I feel great!!!’ …that´s job satisfaction.

Having researched a number of Colleges, l found that ACM was the only one which truly specialised in massage, providing an extensive and diverse range of subjects. I am a personal trainer and gym manager and my massage has seen me work with the Australian Inline Hockey Team as the Strength Trainer and Masseur. This has enabled me to travel with the team to countries such as France for the World Championships. Working as a masseur with Paraolympic athletes has also been very inspiring. It is great to do something you love and get paid for it. I am my own boss, can work my own flexible hours and the financial rewards are fantastic.

l have more than 35 years experience in Circus training and performing, which is mainly concerned with how to use the human body to perform specific tasks. However, since studying at the College my knowledge has expanded. I have particularly applied my massage knowledge in the Circus touring program. In 1999 I took a Circus group to perform in New York, before the tour started we had eleven injured performers. While on tour I adopted the massage skills learned, and the group injuries reduced to three after a six week intensive performing schedule. I also took two groups to the Sydney Olympics. One group was in the opening ceremony and another group was performing at the Sydney Olympic Arts Festival. I adopted the same skills, which produced the same result. The injury rate was amazingly low. I am pleased I had the opportunity to study with ACM as this has helped develop my career further in my current position.

After selling our successful, yet stressful business, my husband and I went on a relaxing 3 week holiday. During our time away we had several massages and I thought what a relaxing occupation it must be. After completing my training at ACM I opened a new business - “The Good Oil Massage & Supplies” incorporating the retailing of holistic and massage related products with my clinic. Massage has opened up a whole new world to me, it’s all about caring and nurturing, and I have found it to be the most relaxing and rewarding thing I’ve ever done.
